Oil, Oil, Everywhere….

For most of us, petrochemical by products are a large part of daily life. For my part, I am tapping away at plastic keys and parts that allow me to interface with the web, all born of black goo pumped up from deposits millions of years old. Imagine, just for a moment, how we have blown through over half of the planetary supply of oil in just 150 years. Add to that the exponential growth of vehicles in places like India and China and you will understand that every single barrel of oil we burn through will cost us more than the one before. This was the form of solar battery that our planet had used for millennea to achieve stasis. It takes time for all truth to pass through the three stages. First we deny it. Then we question, How could it be? finally we accept it as self evident. We are past having to come to grips with the reality, we have despoiled our nest.

Aldrin and deildren are found, contaminating remote lakes in the interior of Isle Royale, located in Lake Superior. These chemicals wafted in from cotton fields in southern states and pineapple crops in the tropics. It makes no difference that they have been banned for years, they are in the fish, they are in the eagles, potentially for ages.

We have met the angel of death, it is the vast solar battery that was our fossil fuel inheritance. Millions of years worth of carbon sequestration burned in a century. Gasoline has been compared to three hundred hours of human effort per gallon…Think of it as a liquid stream of slave labor, propelling us along our inevitable trajectory. American coal is expected to run out in four hundred years at no increased use rate. Oil, much sooner. Not only the cost, but the risk associated with getting deeper oil, and using more remote well heads, will surely result in more, harder to contain catastrophes. Technocrats claim we will be better at containment and recovery, but deploying new technology is expensive.

Permaculture requires re-thinking what the resource base is. Instead of what we can get from the surface of the earth, we begin to see what the earth needs and feed what it lacks. I can guarantee that no soil needs to be treated to a feast of contamination from burning fossil fuel. One wonders how to reclaim more acreage from the urban smog within which it is engulfed. Apart from making every city more walkable, I’m not sure how you could make it work.

Keep putting out feelers, looking for that carpool option. Walk or ride bike as much as possible and enjoy the health benefits that regular exercise brings. Peace fellow travelers. Let your light shine and speak truth to power. ImageNothing else has ever worked.
